Self-initiated editorial project on: “What Birds Dream About: The Evolution of REM and How We Practice the Possible in Our Sleep”

The bird brain is so different from ours, both shape-wise and evolution-wise. By studying the active regions from functional MRI of the bird brain during REM and non-REM sleep, we are able to infer what birds are dreaming: images, sounds, and emotions.

“...It may be that we evolved to dream ourselves into reality — a laboratory of consciousness that began in the bird brain.” Based on the essay published in The Marginalian, originally in The New York Times by Maria Popova.
